Marina Civiero
Contact
| Contact Marina |
Marina Civiero is a contemporary jeweller based in Sydney with galleries and retail stores around Australia, representing her work. She is also currently part of the Jewellery and Object Design teaching staff at the Design Centre, Enmore.
Taking inspiration from many sources, including interiors, nature and fabrics, Marina enjoys incorporating colour and texture into her work. Her current production work features the use of textile materials such as silks and felt, together with precious metals. Utilising textile techniques such as printing and weaving, there is a strong sense of hand work and stitching. Through
attempting to replicate textiles processes and textures, there is also a reminder of her childhood and of her mother, Adele, constantly hand and machine knitting, sewing and stitching.
Since graduating from Jewellery and Object Design at Sydney Institute of Technology, Randwick TAFE in 1993, Marina has worked in many areas of the jewellery industry, from traditional, fashion to contemporary.
In 1994, she began a partnership with fellow graduate, Melissa James and together they formed Wingbeat Designs. From humble beginnings at Bondi Beach Markets, they went on to establish the jewellery gallery/retail outlet, Blue Turtle Studio, located in Newtown, Sydney. From 1996 to 2003 they were designing, making and selling their contemporary jewellery within their colourful and inviting studio.

Artist Statement
I have an interest in graphic design so colour, pattern, and repetition are design elements that I often refer to in my work. Over the past few years I have researched and experimented with titanium anodising using a variety of “masks” and “resists” in order to be able to produce controlled colour on a titanium surface.
Titanium was first utilised by the aerospace industry because of its high strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance, and durability. Today, titanium is used in a wide variety of products including bike frames, golf clubs, laptop computer cases, heart valves, eyeglass frames and watch bands. I use titanium because it is lightweight, it can be coloured & is non-allergenic which altogether makes it an ideal metal for use in jewellery.
