Gemstone Setting
TAFE NSW Course in Gemstone Setting Fundamentals – proposed (19225 ) will commence enrolments in 2009 and will be for jewellery practitioners and graduates of jewellery manufacturing courses, who wish to gain specialised skills and knowledge in gemstone setting. It will prepare learners for employment within the jewellery industry working as specialised gemstone setters.
Custom made one off pieces of jewellery, limited production runs, resetting of stones in the re-design of existing jewellery require the service of the gem setter. Students will learn to apply a variety of specialised gemstone setting techniques on wide ranging selection of gem materials and metals.
On successful completion of this course the graduate will be able to implement techniques and principles involved in the processes of setting gem materials into fine jewellery and use the appropriate gem setting practices in accordance with design specifications and industry standards. They will also be able to employ problem solving techniques to interpret customer requirements which will then reflected in the finished project and apply quality control mechanisms to ensure the finished product reflects industry standard. A thorough knowledge of safe and correct procedures in the use and storage /maintenance of hand tools and chemicals and equipment will also be gained.
Students will gain knowledge in the properties of gemstone materials including hardness, cleavage and handling techniques. They will develop skills in the preparation of setting tools including various types of gravers and pushing tools as used on claw settings, bezel settings and channel settings.
Entry Requirements
NSW School Certificate (or equivalent). Applications are not required for this course; proposed enrolment will be at the end of January and the beginning of February 2009.
