Learning experiences at Design Centre Enmore
Marcelo’s background is in Industrial Design in Chile before studying jewellery & Object Design in Sydney. Rik Juod’s background is in information Technology and more recently Graphic Design prior to studying Jewellery & Object Design. In our final year of our advanced diploma, our individual research into titanium anodising and fold-forming enabled us to develop a range of jewellery that evolved into smug designs. During our studies we gained business skills via professional practise and we also had the opportunity to introduce ourselves to several galleries who became our first customers.
Current practice – Smug Designs
Smug Designs enjoy a collaborative approach to design, in fact many of our designs evolve with input from both of us. Designing wearable and functional objects is an exercise in observation, where our ideas are consolidated into sculptural pieces. Our hand-made designs allow individuals to feel unique in a world so often characterised by mass-production designs. We take inspiration from the minimalism of contemporary Japanese design and architecture, and our products are functionally about simplicity, clean geometry, graphic and colour.
